Saint Francis Hospital – A Legacy of Compassionate Healing
Saint Francis Hospital was established in 1952 by the Mission Sisters of Ajmer, a Catholic religious institute, in the heart of Ajmer, Rajasthan, then known as Rajputana. It was a time in history when the health and well-being of the people of Rajasthan were severely affected by poverty, illiteracy, epidemics, famines, and communicable diseases. Women and children were among the most vulnerable, particularly because of the prevailing purdah system, lack of education, gender inequality, and the unfortunate practices of female foeticide. They were often among those who could truly be described as “the least and the last.”
Moved by the needs of the people and inspired by a deep commitment to the Gospel values of compassion and service, the visionary pioneers of the institution recognized the urgent need for a healthcare facility that would reach out to the marginalized and vulnerable sections of society.
The hospital had a humble beginning as a nursing home, even before the establishment of JLN Government Medical College, which is the only medical college in the town. From its inception, the hospital placed special emphasis on the healthcare of women and children. Consequently, over the years, a significant majority of its beneficiaries have been women and children, particularly those from economically and socially disadvantaged backgrounds.
With the passage of time, Saint Francis Hospital has evolved and continues to grow into a 250-bedded multispecialty hospital, serving the healthcare needs of the poor and middle-class communities of Ajmer and the surrounding rural areas. It reaches out especially to those living on the margins of society, offering quality healthcare with dignity, compassion, and a spirit of service.
Today, Saint Francis Hospital remains committed to its mission of compassionate healing, where care goes beyond cure. It strives not only to treat illness but also to accompany individuals and families with understanding, dignity, and hope—continuing the legacy of its pioneers who believed that every person, especially the least and the last, deserves to be cared for.
